Buenos días,
Hacía mucho tiempo que no me pasaba por este foro en el que tantas horas estuve, pero recientemente me apunté en Geekbuying para obtener un Zidoo X1, un Android TV de bajo precio, y aceptaron mi propuesta, por lo que paso a crear esta review del aparato, el cual debo decir que me ha sorprendido muy gratamente para su bajo precio.
Por motivos obvios, esta review está hecha en dos idiomas: español, el principal de este foro, e inglés, el que maneja Geekbuying.

REVIEW DEL ZIDOO X1

La caja tiene buen aspecto y está bien hecha. Echo de menos un cable AV, ya que el X1 se puede conectar a la TV por HDMI o por video compuesto.
CARCASA:
Bastante original. Recuerda a una tortuga o una concha marina. Todo en plástico, pero bastante sólida. No hace ruidos ni se notan partes flojas dentro, aunque sí tiene aspecto de barata, pese a estar bien construida.
El panel frontal sólo tiene un led para indicar si el aparato está funcionando (luz azul) o no (sin luz) o cargando o en modo standby (luz roja) además del receptor de infrarrojos del mando a distancia. El panel trasero contiene todas las conexiones de vídeo, audio y USB.
Las entradas y salidas del panel trasero son:
- Salida de vídeo. Parece para el típico cable de jack de 3,5” a vídeo compuesto, pero como no venía tal cable no puedo estar 100% seguro.
- Salida HDMI. Ésta es la única que he podido probar, utilizando el cable incluido en el paquete.
- Entrada USB. En ésta se pueden conectar unidades USB, como pendrives o discos duros, aunque dudo que el X1 pueda proporcionar suficiente energía, por lo que seguramente sea necesario usar alimentación externa para conectar discos duros. También es posible conectar adaptadores USB para Bluetooth o receptores de teclado o ratón inalámbrico. He probado ambas opciones y funcionan perfectamente. También es posible conectar una webcam, razón por la que el X1 incluye aplicación de cámara aunque no incluya la cámara.
- Entrada RJ45, para que puedas conectar el X1 a tu router mediante un cable Ethernet. El X1 también soporta WIFI.
- Entrada USB/TF. Ésta es un poco extraña, puesto que nunca había visto algo así. En el USB se puede conectar lo mismo que en el otro, y sobre él hay una pequeña ranura para una tarjeta microSD, lo que permite que se pueda ampliar el almacenamiento del X1 de varias maneras diferentes, lo cual está muy bien.
- Conexión para el adaptador de corriente DC 5v.
En la parte inferior encontrarás un pequeño agujero que esconde el botón de reset, el cual deberás pulsar usando un alfiler, un palillo de dientes o algo similar.
MANDO A DISTANCIA:
Éste es uno de los mejores detalles del X1. El mando, que usa un par de pilas AAA, tiene aspecto sólido. Es agradable al tacto y los botones emiten un audible clic al pulsarlos, con lo que no te quedarás nunca con la duda de si los has pulsado o no.
En la fila superior, tiene unos pocos botones programables, que se pueden configurar para aprender las funciones de sus equivalentes en el mando de tu TV, de modo que puedas encender y apagar la TV, cambiar el método de entrada de ésta y subir o bajar el volumen sin tener que cambiar de mando. Hacer que el mando del X1 aprenda estas funciones es muy sencillo y en caso de que olvides cómo, en la parte trasera hay una pegatina con instrucciones para que puedas recordar el proceso en cualquier momento.
Aparte de eso, el mando contiene los típicos botones de Android (home, menú, atrás) y también botones de volumen (para el volumen del X1 y no de la TV) y botones para controlar la reproducción de audio y vídeo o navegar por los menús. Hay también un botón para activar y desactivar el “mouse mode”. Por defecto está desactivado, lo que significa que los elementos del menú se tratan como casillas entre las que te puedes mover con las flechas del mando. Con la mayoría de aplicaciones, esto no es posible, y es entonces cuando tendrás que activar el modo ratón. En dicho modo, aparece un puntero de ratón en pantalla. Mueves el puntero con las flechas y llevas a cabo funciones con el botón OK. La pulsación larga se hace manteniendo apretado el botón OK.
El modo ratón es muy útil, pero recomiendo usar un ratón externo. He probado mi X1 con un teclado Logitech K400, que también incluye un touchpad y funciona con un receptor USB. Funcionó de maravilla e hizo que la navegación fuera muy agradable. Además, teclear en un teclado virtual con unas flechas y un botón OK es bastante engorroso, sobre todo cuando necesitas escribir palabras o frases largas.
ENCENDIENDO EL X1:
Tras conectar el X1 a la TV y al adaptador de corriente, se enciende mediante el mando a distancia, con el botón rojo. Después de eso, se ve la animación de inicio (un simple logo de Zidoo brillando) y, tras cerca de medio minuto, se llega a esta pantalla de inicio:
Como se puede ver, el launcher por defecto es bastante limpio y agradable. Únicamente un vidget de clima, unos pocos accesos directos (ampliables) y la barra de navegación del X1. Para ver las barras de navegación y notificaciones de Android hay que cambiar a modo ratón, mover el puntero a la parte inferior de la pantalla y pulsar OK. Ésta será la primera vez en la que veas que el mando a distancia no sirve para todo. Si quieres expandir la barra de notificaciones en la parte superior de la pantalla, necesitarás un ratón real, para poder mantener pulsado el botón y moverlo al mismo tiempo.
Por defecto, se incluyen estos accesos directos:
- Google Play Store: su función es bastante obvia.
- Update: permite actualizar el firmware, bien por la red (OTA, “over the air”) o manualmente. Yo he sido capaz de actualizar manualmente, pero la opción OTA nunca me funcionó.
- Shortcut Keys: permite configurar qué aplicación lanzar al pulsar cualquiera de los tres botones coloreados del mando a distancia. Estos botones actúan como accesos directos y lanzan la aplicación configurada.
- Zidoo RC: otra buena cosa que se puede hacer es controlar el X1 usando otro dispositivo Android. Desde esta pantalla se puede instalar la aplicación de control remoto, escaneando un código QR que se muestra. Por descontado, ambos dispositivos deben estar en la misma red.
- Easy cast: permite compartir el contenido de la pantalla del X1 con otros dispositivos, mediante DLNA (la opción más genérica, aceptada por muchos fabricantes y dispositivos) o AirPlay (sólo pata dispositivos Apple). Por otro lado, también hay una aplicación, para usar el X1 como receptor (mediante Miracast) y mostrar el contenido de la pantalla de otros dispositivos. La aplicación se llama “Miracast receiver”.
- Add app: Permite añadir otro acceso directo.
La barra de navegación del X1, que no es modificable, incluye estos accesos directos::
- Kodi: acceso a Kodi, el media center del X1, Kodi es una aplicación de código abierto, anteriormente conocida como XBMC Media Center, que convierte el X1 en un media center para todos tus vídeos, imágenes y archivos de audio, con multitud de opciones y plug-ins.
- Explorer: acceso a un explorador de archivos.
- Apps: acceso al cajón de aplicaciones
- Settings: acceso a la configuración de Android
- Web: acceso al navegador web
CAJÓN DE APLICACIONES:
El cajón de aplicaciones sigue el mismo patrón de diseño que la pantalla de inicio, con un interfaz limpio y agradable. Sólo echo de menos la posibilidad de ordenar las aplicaciones alfabéticamente. Las aplicaciones recientemente instaladas aparecerán momentáneamente al comienzo del listada y luego el X1 ordena las aplicaciones mediante criterios de frecuencia de uso, lo cual está bien cuando sólo tienes una pocas, pero es un como un grano en el culo cuando, como yo, instalas muchas aplicaciones.
Lanzar una aplicación es tan simple como navegar hacia el icono (en modo normal) o colocar sobre ella el icono del ratón (en modo ratón) y pulsar el botón OK del mando a distancia, o el botón izquierdo del ratón, en caso de que uses uno externo.
Para desinstalar una aplicación hay que hacer sobre ella una pulsación larga del botón OK o una simple del de menú. Entonces aparecerá un menú en el que se puede seleccionar desinstalar la aplicación. En este menú, también se puede indicar que aplicación se quiere que se lance al encender el X1, por lo que es posible, por ejemplo, hacer que el X1 se inicie en Kodi cada vez.
ACTUALIZAR EL X1:
Para actualizar a un nuevo firmware, hay que abrir la aplicación Update, bien desde el menú principal o bien desde el cajón de aplicaciones. En ambos casos, se muestra la siguiente pantalla:
Aquí puedes escoger entre actualización online o manual. Mi X1 vino con el firmware h3_v1.0.14, aunque Zidoo ya ha lanzado las versiones 1.0.15 y 1.0.16, la que tengo actualmente. Tengo que decir que la actualización online no me funcionó nunca, y he probado las tres versiones. La manual funcionó perfectamente. Para actualizar manualmente, tienes que bajar tú el firmware (puedes hacer en el propio X1 o mediante un PC y transfiriendo luego el archivo al X1 mediante USB o una microSD) y seleccionar “local update”. Tras indicar dónde está el archivo, el sistema comienza el proceso de actualización, que no debería superar los 5 minutos. Debes evitar apagar el X1 durante este proceso para no estropearlo.
Una nota importante: el Zidoo X1 con firmare h3_v1.0.14 no viene rooteado, y deberás dar con la forma de rootearlo tú. Desde la versión 1.0.15 viene ya rooteado de fábrica, e incluye la aplicación SuperSU.
HARDWARE:
-CPU: Allwinner H3. No es la más potente del mercado, pero sí una opción muy asequible, razón por la que el X1 tiene un precio tan bajo. Funciona bien con vídeo en 720p, 1080p y hasta 4K, y puede correr algunos juegos 3D (los más exigentes pueden experimentar “frame dropping”). No se calienta mucho, con lo que su manejo es suave y seguro.
- Memoria RAM: 1 Gb. No se puede pedir más por ese precio, pero otro Gb más hubiera sido ideal. Pero, incluso así, obtienes un aparato potente a un precio asequible, lo cual es una gran ventaja.
- Almacenamiento: 8 Gb. Suficiente para las aplicaciones que necesitará un media center, pero un poco escasa para jugadores.
RENDIMIENTO:
En lo referente al rendimiento, el Zidoo X1 funciona razonablemente bien para un producto así de barato (unos 54€ con envío incluido) pero puede sufrir un ligero “frame dropping” en vídeos de muy alta resolución. Como en otros dispositivos Android, es posible probar diferentes aplicaciones de media center o reproductores de vídeo para ver si encuentras opciones mejores. Hay gente que dice haber sido capaz de sustituir el Kodi incluido en el sistema por una versión posterior, pero eso es algo para usuarios avanzados y es posible que debas reinstalar el firmware en el caso de que rompas algo.
APPS RECOMENDADAS:
Si quieres usar el Zidoo X1 como reproductor multimedia, eso es precisamente para lo que se creó, por lo que todas las aplicaciones están ya incluidas, como Kodi o el reproductor de música de Android.
Si quieres ver películas, puedes empezar por instalar Google Play Movies. Si tu país está soportado, puedes alquilar o comprar películas por poco dinero en tu propio idioma. Hay otras aplicaciones para ver películas “gratis”, pero esas entran en la categoría de “piratas” y no las mencionaré en esta review. El X1 incluye Aptoide (estos chinos nunca aprenden…) así que puedes instalar casi cualquier aplicación, gratuita o de pago (pero no esperes que las de pago funcionen sin más, ya que muchas intentarán comprobar si las compraste en Google Play Store).
Recuerda que toda aplicación disponible en Google Play Store debería funcionar, así que si posees teclado y ratón externos, podrías usar el X1 como un mini ordenador. Hay ya disponibles bastantes suites estilo Office (WPS Office, Officesuite, etc.) o navegadores web (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, etc.) por lo que es posible usarlo como un PC adicional, algo que tus hijo podrían aprovechar, e incluso arrojarlo al suelo sin romperlo.
Los juegos parecen ser un problema, ya que bastante gente ha reportado que el X1 no soporta mandos de juegos, por lo que sólo los juegos que se puedan jugar con teclado y ratón inalámbricos, son realmente jugables. Espero que esto se solucione en un futuro próximo y Zidoo incluya los drivers correspondientes.
CONCLUSIONES:
PROS:
- Aparato pequeño que puedes colocar en cualquier sitio.
- Soporta diversos formatos de audio y vídeo.
- Incluye Kodi, completo e intuitivo.
- Muy asequible.
- Gran soporte por parte de Zidoo, con tres actualizaciones de firmware en sólo un mes desde el lanzamiento.
- Rooteado de fábrica, desde la versión 1.0.15
- Mando a distancia muy bueno y práctico
- Interfaz claro, agradable y rápido
CONTRAS:
- No soporta mandos de juego
- “Frame dropping” en algunas situaciones
- Debería incluir cable AV
- Algunas secciones no están traducidas del inglés

The box is nice and well packaged. I miss an AV cable, since the X1 can be hooked to the TV set by either HDMI or composite video.
CASE:
Quite original, indeed. The shape reminds that of a turtle, or a shell. All in plastic, but quite sturdy. No cracks or moving parts, but feels definitely cheap, although quite well built.
The front panel only has a led light to indicate whether the unit is working (blue light on) or not (no light at all) or loading or in standby mode (red light on), along with the IR receiver for the remote. The back panel contains all the video, audio and USB connections.
The inputs and outputs on the back panel are:
- Analog AV output. This looks like the usual jack to composite video output, although as no cable is included with the unit, I can't be completely sure
- HDMI output. This is the only video output I've been able to test, using the included HDMI cable.
- USB input. Here you can connect USB drives, such as memory keys or hard drives, although I doubt the X1 can provide enough power, so you'll have to use external power when connecting hard drives. You can also connect a Bluetooth dongle or a wireless receiver for external keyboards and mice. I've tested both and they work like a charm. You can also hook a webcam (that's why there's a camera app even if Zidoo X1 doesn't include a camera).
- RJ45 input, so you can hook the X1 to your router via an Ethernet cable. The X1 also supports WIFI.
- USB/TF input. This is a bit weird, since I had never since such a thing. On the USB input you can connect everything you can use on the other USB port, and on top of it you have a tiny slot for a TF (microSD) card, so storage expansion on the X1 can be done in several ways, which is very nice.
- DC 5v input for the power unit.
On the bottom of the unit you'll find a tiny hole that hides the reset button, which you'll have to trigger using a pin or a toothpick, for example.
REMOTE:
This is one of the highlights of the X1. The remote, which uses a pair of AAA batteries, feels very well built. It's nice to the touch and the buttons emit a clearly audible click sound when pressed, so you don't have to guess whether you have pressed them or not.
On the top row, it's got a few programmable buttons which can be set up to learn the functions of their counterparts in you TV's remote, so you can turn the TV on and off, select input method, and raise or lower volume without having to drop the X1 remote and pick up the TV remote. Making the X1 remote "learn" the functions is quite easy and in case you forget, there's a sticker with instructions on the back so you can remember the process anytime.
Besides that, the remote contains all the usual android buttons (home, menu, back) and also volume buttons (which change the device's volume, not TV's) and buttons to control playback of music/video or navigating through menus. There's also a button to turn "mouse mode" on or off. By default the X1 works in non mouse mode, which means items on the screen are treated as tiles and you move from one to others using the arrow keys. When using most apps, this is not possible, so that's when you'll need to use mouse mode. In such a mode, a mouse pointer appears on the screen. You move the pointer with the arrow keys and perform actions with the OK button. Long presses are done keeping the OK button pressed.
Mouse mode is quite useful, but I recommend you to get an external mouse. I've tested my X1 with a Logitech K400 keyboard, which also includes a touchpad, and works with a USB wireless receiver. It worked like a charm and made navigation really nice. Also, typing on a virtual keyboard with arrows keys and an OK button is quite a pain sometimes, especially if you have to write a long word or sentence.
POWERING UP THE X1:
After hooking the X1 to the TV and the power unit, you need to turn it on from the remote, using the red power button. After that, you'll see the boot animation (just glowing Zidoo logo) and, after half a minute or so, you get to the following home screen:
As you can see, the default launcher is quite nice and clean. Just a weather widget, a few shortcuts (which can be expanded) and the X1 navigation bar. In order to see the Android navigation and status bars, you have to switch to mouse mode and then move the mouse all the way to the bottom of the screen. This is the first time you'll notice that the remote is not suitable for everything. If you want to expand the notification area on top of the screen, you have to use a real mouse, so you can left click and move the mouse at the same time.
By default, you'll find these icons already set up for you:
- Google Play Store: obviously, to access the store.
- Update: lets you update the firmware, either over the air (OTA) or manually. I've successfully upgraded manually, but didn't manage to do it over the air.
- Shortcut Keys: lets you set up the three colored buttons on the remote. These act as shortcuts, so when you press any of them, the configured app will be launched.
- Zidoo RC: another nice thing you can do is control the X1 using any other android device. From this screen you can install the required app by scanning the provided QR code. Of course, both devices need to be on the same network.
- Easy cast: lets you share the X1 screen with other devices, via DLNA (the most generic option, accepted by many makers and devices) or Airplay (only for Apple devices). On the other hand, there's also an app to use the X1 as a receiver (via Miracast) to show other devices' screens. The app is called "Miracast receiver".
- Add app: lets you add a new shortcut to the list.
The X1 navigation bar, which can't be modified, includes these shortcuts:
- Kodi: access to Kodi, the Zidoo X1 Media Center. Kodi is an open source app, formerly known ad XBMC Media Center, that acts as your own media center for all your videos, pictures and audio files, with lots of options and plug-ins.
- Explorer: access to a file explorer.
- Apps: access to the app drawer.
- Settings: access to the Android settings.
- Web: access to the web browser.
APP DRAWER:
The app drawer follows the same design style as of the home screen, with a nice and clean interface. I only miss an option to sort the apps alphabetically. Newly installed apps appear on the first places for a while, and then the X1 sorts the apps based on usage statistics, which is nice if you just use a few of them, but a pain in the ass if you, like me, install a lot of apps.
Launching an app is as simple as navigating to it (in non mouse mode) or moving the mouse pointer (in mouse mode) and pushing OK on the remote, or the left mouse button in case you use an external mouse.
In order to uninstall an app, you just have to long press OK or single press the menu button when it's selected. This will pop up a menu where you can choose to uninstall the app. In this menu, you can also choose an app to be launched automatically every time you power on the X1, so you can, for example, make the device boot to Kodi every time.
UPDATING THE X1:
In order to update to a new firmware, you have to open the Update app, either from the home screen or the app drawer. In all these two cases, you'll be shown the following screen:
Here, you can choose online or manual update. My X1 came with firmware h3_v1.0.14 installed, but Zidoo have already launched 1.0.15 and 1.0.16, the one I have currently installed. I have to say that online update never worked, and I tried all three versions. Manual updating worked like a charm. To update manually, you have to download the firmware file yourself (you can do it on the X1 or a PC and transfer the file to the X1 via USB or TF card) and choose manual update. After browsing to the file location, the system will begin the update process, which shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. You must avoid turning the X1 off until the process is finished, or you’ll risk bricking the device.
One important note: Zidoo X1 with stock firmware h3_v1.0.14 is not rooted, and you'll have to find a way to root it. From version 1.0.15 the system is already pre-rooted and included the SuperSU app.
HARDWARE:
-CPU: Allwinner H3. It's not the most powerful SoC available, but a very affordable option, which is why the X1 is priced so low. It works well with 720p, 1080p and 4K movies, and can also run some 3D games (the most demanding ones can experience frame dropping). It doesn't reach very high temperatures, so device operation is smooth and safe.
- RAM memory: 1 Gb. You can’t ask for more at such a low price, but another Gb would've been ideal. But, still, you get quite a powerful device for a reasonable price, which is a plus.
- Storage: 8 Gb. Enough for the apps you'll need on a media center device, but a bit low for gamers.
PERFORMANCE:
Performance wise, the Zidoo X1 works reasonably well for such a bargain product (around $60 shipping included) but you might suffer form a little frame dropping on very high resolution videos. Like with other Android devices, you can try different media center apps or video players to see if you can find better ones. Some people have reported they have been able to replace the built in Kodi with a newer and better version, but that's something meant for advanced users and you might end up having to reinstall the firmware if you break something.
APP RECOMMENDATIONS:
If you want to use the Zidoo X1 as a media player, that's what it's meant for, so the apps are already built in, such as Kodi and the Android music player.
If you wish to watch movies, you can start by installing Google Play Movies. If your country is supported, you can rent or buy movies in your local language for a few $. There are other apps to watch movies "for free", but those fall in the "piracy" category, so I will not cover them in this review. The X1 includes Aptoide (these Chinese makers never learn...) so you can download almost any app with it, paid or not (but don't expect paid apps to work, since many will try to check whether you purchased them through Google Play Store).
Don't forget that any app available on the Google Play Store is supposed to work, so if you own and external keyboard and a mouse, you could even use the X1 as a mini computer. There are already many Office suites available (WPS Office, Officesuite, etc.), as well as Internet Browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, etc.) so you can use it as a spare PC, something your kids can enjoy an even smash on your floor without breaking it.
Gaming seems an issue, since many people have reported the X1 doesn't currently support the usage of gamepads, so only games which can be played with an external mouse and keyboard are really playable. I hope this will be fixed in the near future, with Zidoo adding the corresponding drivers.

- Good support from Zidoo, with three firmware versions already available in just a month after its release

En la parte inferior encontrarás un pequeño agujero que esconde el botón de reset, el cual deberás pulsar usando un alfiler, un palillo de dientes o algo similar.
MANDO A DISTANCIA:
Éste es uno de los mejores detalles del X1. El mando, que usa un par de pilas AAA, tiene aspecto sólido. Es agradable al tacto y los botones emiten un audible clic al pulsarlos, con lo que no te quedarás nunca con la duda de si los has pulsado o no.
En la fila superior, tiene unos pocos botones programables, que se pueden configurar para aprender las funciones de sus equivalentes en el mando de tu TV, de modo que puedas encender y apagar la TV, cambiar el método de entrada de ésta y subir o bajar el volumen sin tener que cambiar de mando. Hacer que el mando del X1 aprenda estas funciones es muy sencillo y en caso de que olvides cómo, en la parte trasera hay una pegatina con instrucciones para que puedas recordar el proceso en cualquier momento.
Aparte de eso, el mando contiene los típicos botones de Android (home, menú, atrás) y también botones de volumen (para el volumen del X1 y no de la TV) y botones para controlar la reproducción de audio y vídeo o navegar por los menús. Hay también un botón para activar y desactivar el “mouse mode”. Por defecto está desactivado, lo que significa que los elementos del menú se tratan como casillas entre las que te puedes mover con las flechas del mando. Con la mayoría de aplicaciones, esto no es posible, y es entonces cuando tendrás que activar el modo ratón. En dicho modo, aparece un puntero de ratón en pantalla. Mueves el puntero con las flechas y llevas a cabo funciones con el botón OK. La pulsación larga se hace manteniendo apretado el botón OK.
El modo ratón es muy útil, pero recomiendo usar un ratón externo. He probado mi X1 con un teclado Logitech K400, que también incluye un touchpad y funciona con un receptor USB. Funcionó de maravilla e hizo que la navegación fuera muy agradable. Además, teclear en un teclado virtual con unas flechas y un botón OK es bastante engorroso, sobre todo cuando necesitas escribir palabras o frases largas.
ENCENDIENDO EL X1:
Tras conectar el X1 a la TV y al adaptador de corriente, se enciende mediante el mando a distancia, con el botón rojo. Después de eso, se ve la animación de inicio (un simple logo de Zidoo brillando) y, tras cerca de medio minuto, se llega a esta pantalla de inicio:
Como se puede ver, el launcher por defecto es bastante limpio y agradable. Únicamente un vidget de clima, unos pocos accesos directos (ampliables) y la barra de navegación del X1. Para ver las barras de navegación y notificaciones de Android hay que cambiar a modo ratón, mover el puntero a la parte inferior de la pantalla y pulsar OK. Ésta será la primera vez en la que veas que el mando a distancia no sirve para todo. Si quieres expandir la barra de notificaciones en la parte superior de la pantalla, necesitarás un ratón real, para poder mantener pulsado el botón y moverlo al mismo tiempo.
Por defecto, se incluyen estos accesos directos:
- Google Play Store: su función es bastante obvia.
- Update: permite actualizar el firmware, bien por la red (OTA, “over the air”) o manualmente. Yo he sido capaz de actualizar manualmente, pero la opción OTA nunca me funcionó.
- Shortcut Keys: permite configurar qué aplicación lanzar al pulsar cualquiera de los tres botones coloreados del mando a distancia. Estos botones actúan como accesos directos y lanzan la aplicación configurada.
- Zidoo RC: otra buena cosa que se puede hacer es controlar el X1 usando otro dispositivo Android. Desde esta pantalla se puede instalar la aplicación de control remoto, escaneando un código QR que se muestra. Por descontado, ambos dispositivos deben estar en la misma red.
- Easy cast: permite compartir el contenido de la pantalla del X1 con otros dispositivos, mediante DLNA (la opción más genérica, aceptada por muchos fabricantes y dispositivos) o AirPlay (sólo pata dispositivos Apple). Por otro lado, también hay una aplicación, para usar el X1 como receptor (mediante Miracast) y mostrar el contenido de la pantalla de otros dispositivos. La aplicación se llama “Miracast receiver”.
- Add app: Permite añadir otro acceso directo.
La barra de navegación del X1, que no es modificable, incluye estos accesos directos::
- Kodi: acceso a Kodi, el media center del X1, Kodi es una aplicación de código abierto, anteriormente conocida como XBMC Media Center, que convierte el X1 en un media center para todos tus vídeos, imágenes y archivos de audio, con multitud de opciones y plug-ins.
- Explorer: acceso a un explorador de archivos.
- Apps: acceso al cajón de aplicaciones
- Settings: acceso a la configuración de Android
- Web: acceso al navegador web
CAJÓN DE APLICACIONES:
El cajón de aplicaciones sigue el mismo patrón de diseño que la pantalla de inicio, con un interfaz limpio y agradable. Sólo echo de menos la posibilidad de ordenar las aplicaciones alfabéticamente. Las aplicaciones recientemente instaladas aparecerán momentáneamente al comienzo del listada y luego el X1 ordena las aplicaciones mediante criterios de frecuencia de uso, lo cual está bien cuando sólo tienes una pocas, pero es un como un grano en el culo cuando, como yo, instalas muchas aplicaciones.
Lanzar una aplicación es tan simple como navegar hacia el icono (en modo normal) o colocar sobre ella el icono del ratón (en modo ratón) y pulsar el botón OK del mando a distancia, o el botón izquierdo del ratón, en caso de que uses uno externo.
Para desinstalar una aplicación hay que hacer sobre ella una pulsación larga del botón OK o una simple del de menú. Entonces aparecerá un menú en el que se puede seleccionar desinstalar la aplicación. En este menú, también se puede indicar que aplicación se quiere que se lance al encender el X1, por lo que es posible, por ejemplo, hacer que el X1 se inicie en Kodi cada vez.
ACTUALIZAR EL X1:
Para actualizar a un nuevo firmware, hay que abrir la aplicación Update, bien desde el menú principal o bien desde el cajón de aplicaciones. En ambos casos, se muestra la siguiente pantalla:
Aquí puedes escoger entre actualización online o manual. Mi X1 vino con el firmware h3_v1.0.14, aunque Zidoo ya ha lanzado las versiones 1.0.15 y 1.0.16, la que tengo actualmente. Tengo que decir que la actualización online no me funcionó nunca, y he probado las tres versiones. La manual funcionó perfectamente. Para actualizar manualmente, tienes que bajar tú el firmware (puedes hacer en el propio X1 o mediante un PC y transfiriendo luego el archivo al X1 mediante USB o una microSD) y seleccionar “local update”. Tras indicar dónde está el archivo, el sistema comienza el proceso de actualización, que no debería superar los 5 minutos. Debes evitar apagar el X1 durante este proceso para no estropearlo.
Una nota importante: el Zidoo X1 con firmare h3_v1.0.14 no viene rooteado, y deberás dar con la forma de rootearlo tú. Desde la versión 1.0.15 viene ya rooteado de fábrica, e incluye la aplicación SuperSU.
HARDWARE:
-CPU: Allwinner H3. No es la más potente del mercado, pero sí una opción muy asequible, razón por la que el X1 tiene un precio tan bajo. Funciona bien con vídeo en 720p, 1080p y hasta 4K, y puede correr algunos juegos 3D (los más exigentes pueden experimentar “frame dropping”). No se calienta mucho, con lo que su manejo es suave y seguro.
- Memoria RAM: 1 Gb. No se puede pedir más por ese precio, pero otro Gb más hubiera sido ideal. Pero, incluso así, obtienes un aparato potente a un precio asequible, lo cual es una gran ventaja.
- Almacenamiento: 8 Gb. Suficiente para las aplicaciones que necesitará un media center, pero un poco escasa para jugadores.
RENDIMIENTO:
En lo referente al rendimiento, el Zidoo X1 funciona razonablemente bien para un producto así de barato (unos 54€ con envío incluido) pero puede sufrir un ligero “frame dropping” en vídeos de muy alta resolución. Como en otros dispositivos Android, es posible probar diferentes aplicaciones de media center o reproductores de vídeo para ver si encuentras opciones mejores. Hay gente que dice haber sido capaz de sustituir el Kodi incluido en el sistema por una versión posterior, pero eso es algo para usuarios avanzados y es posible que debas reinstalar el firmware en el caso de que rompas algo.
APPS RECOMENDADAS:
Si quieres usar el Zidoo X1 como reproductor multimedia, eso es precisamente para lo que se creó, por lo que todas las aplicaciones están ya incluidas, como Kodi o el reproductor de música de Android.
Si quieres ver películas, puedes empezar por instalar Google Play Movies. Si tu país está soportado, puedes alquilar o comprar películas por poco dinero en tu propio idioma. Hay otras aplicaciones para ver películas “gratis”, pero esas entran en la categoría de “piratas” y no las mencionaré en esta review. El X1 incluye Aptoide (estos chinos nunca aprenden…) así que puedes instalar casi cualquier aplicación, gratuita o de pago (pero no esperes que las de pago funcionen sin más, ya que muchas intentarán comprobar si las compraste en Google Play Store).
Recuerda que toda aplicación disponible en Google Play Store debería funcionar, así que si posees teclado y ratón externos, podrías usar el X1 como un mini ordenador. Hay ya disponibles bastantes suites estilo Office (WPS Office, Officesuite, etc.) o navegadores web (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, etc.) por lo que es posible usarlo como un PC adicional, algo que tus hijo podrían aprovechar, e incluso arrojarlo al suelo sin romperlo.
Los juegos parecen ser un problema, ya que bastante gente ha reportado que el X1 no soporta mandos de juegos, por lo que sólo los juegos que se puedan jugar con teclado y ratón inalámbricos, son realmente jugables. Espero que esto se solucione en un futuro próximo y Zidoo incluya los drivers correspondientes.
CONCLUSIONES:

- Aparato pequeño que puedes colocar en cualquier sitio.

The box is nice and well packaged. I miss an AV cable, since the X1 can be hooked to the TV set by either HDMI or composite video.
CASE:
Quite original, indeed. The shape reminds that of a turtle, or a shell. All in plastic, but quite sturdy. No cracks or moving parts, but feels definitely cheap, although quite well built.
The front panel only has a led light to indicate whether the unit is working (blue light on) or not (no light at all) or loading or in standby mode (red light on), along with the IR receiver for the remote. The back panel contains all the video, audio and USB connections.
The inputs and outputs on the back panel are:
- Analog AV output. This looks like the usual jack to composite video output, although as no cable is included with the unit, I can't be completely sure
- HDMI output. This is the only video output I've been able to test, using the included HDMI cable.
- USB input. Here you can connect USB drives, such as memory keys or hard drives, although I doubt the X1 can provide enough power, so you'll have to use external power when connecting hard drives. You can also connect a Bluetooth dongle or a wireless receiver for external keyboards and mice. I've tested both and they work like a charm. You can also hook a webcam (that's why there's a camera app even if Zidoo X1 doesn't include a camera).
- RJ45 input, so you can hook the X1 to your router via an Ethernet cable. The X1 also supports WIFI.
- USB/TF input. This is a bit weird, since I had never since such a thing. On the USB input you can connect everything you can use on the other USB port, and on top of it you have a tiny slot for a TF (microSD) card, so storage expansion on the X1 can be done in several ways, which is very nice.
- DC 5v input for the power unit.
On the bottom of the unit you'll find a tiny hole that hides the reset button, which you'll have to trigger using a pin or a toothpick, for example.
REMOTE:
This is one of the highlights of the X1. The remote, which uses a pair of AAA batteries, feels very well built. It's nice to the touch and the buttons emit a clearly audible click sound when pressed, so you don't have to guess whether you have pressed them or not.
On the top row, it's got a few programmable buttons which can be set up to learn the functions of their counterparts in you TV's remote, so you can turn the TV on and off, select input method, and raise or lower volume without having to drop the X1 remote and pick up the TV remote. Making the X1 remote "learn" the functions is quite easy and in case you forget, there's a sticker with instructions on the back so you can remember the process anytime.
Besides that, the remote contains all the usual android buttons (home, menu, back) and also volume buttons (which change the device's volume, not TV's) and buttons to control playback of music/video or navigating through menus. There's also a button to turn "mouse mode" on or off. By default the X1 works in non mouse mode, which means items on the screen are treated as tiles and you move from one to others using the arrow keys. When using most apps, this is not possible, so that's when you'll need to use mouse mode. In such a mode, a mouse pointer appears on the screen. You move the pointer with the arrow keys and perform actions with the OK button. Long presses are done keeping the OK button pressed.
Mouse mode is quite useful, but I recommend you to get an external mouse. I've tested my X1 with a Logitech K400 keyboard, which also includes a touchpad, and works with a USB wireless receiver. It worked like a charm and made navigation really nice. Also, typing on a virtual keyboard with arrows keys and an OK button is quite a pain sometimes, especially if you have to write a long word or sentence.
POWERING UP THE X1:
After hooking the X1 to the TV and the power unit, you need to turn it on from the remote, using the red power button. After that, you'll see the boot animation (just glowing Zidoo logo) and, after half a minute or so, you get to the following home screen:
As you can see, the default launcher is quite nice and clean. Just a weather widget, a few shortcuts (which can be expanded) and the X1 navigation bar. In order to see the Android navigation and status bars, you have to switch to mouse mode and then move the mouse all the way to the bottom of the screen. This is the first time you'll notice that the remote is not suitable for everything. If you want to expand the notification area on top of the screen, you have to use a real mouse, so you can left click and move the mouse at the same time.
By default, you'll find these icons already set up for you:
- Google Play Store: obviously, to access the store.
- Update: lets you update the firmware, either over the air (OTA) or manually. I've successfully upgraded manually, but didn't manage to do it over the air.
- Shortcut Keys: lets you set up the three colored buttons on the remote. These act as shortcuts, so when you press any of them, the configured app will be launched.
- Zidoo RC: another nice thing you can do is control the X1 using any other android device. From this screen you can install the required app by scanning the provided QR code. Of course, both devices need to be on the same network.
- Easy cast: lets you share the X1 screen with other devices, via DLNA (the most generic option, accepted by many makers and devices) or Airplay (only for Apple devices). On the other hand, there's also an app to use the X1 as a receiver (via Miracast) to show other devices' screens. The app is called "Miracast receiver".
- Add app: lets you add a new shortcut to the list.
The X1 navigation bar, which can't be modified, includes these shortcuts:
- Kodi: access to Kodi, the Zidoo X1 Media Center. Kodi is an open source app, formerly known ad XBMC Media Center, that acts as your own media center for all your videos, pictures and audio files, with lots of options and plug-ins.
- Explorer: access to a file explorer.
- Apps: access to the app drawer.
- Settings: access to the Android settings.
- Web: access to the web browser.
APP DRAWER:
The app drawer follows the same design style as of the home screen, with a nice and clean interface. I only miss an option to sort the apps alphabetically. Newly installed apps appear on the first places for a while, and then the X1 sorts the apps based on usage statistics, which is nice if you just use a few of them, but a pain in the ass if you, like me, install a lot of apps.
Launching an app is as simple as navigating to it (in non mouse mode) or moving the mouse pointer (in mouse mode) and pushing OK on the remote, or the left mouse button in case you use an external mouse.
In order to uninstall an app, you just have to long press OK or single press the menu button when it's selected. This will pop up a menu where you can choose to uninstall the app. In this menu, you can also choose an app to be launched automatically every time you power on the X1, so you can, for example, make the device boot to Kodi every time.
UPDATING THE X1:
In order to update to a new firmware, you have to open the Update app, either from the home screen or the app drawer. In all these two cases, you'll be shown the following screen:
Here, you can choose online or manual update. My X1 came with firmware h3_v1.0.14 installed, but Zidoo have already launched 1.0.15 and 1.0.16, the one I have currently installed. I have to say that online update never worked, and I tried all three versions. Manual updating worked like a charm. To update manually, you have to download the firmware file yourself (you can do it on the X1 or a PC and transfer the file to the X1 via USB or TF card) and choose manual update. After browsing to the file location, the system will begin the update process, which shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. You must avoid turning the X1 off until the process is finished, or you’ll risk bricking the device.
One important note: Zidoo X1 with stock firmware h3_v1.0.14 is not rooted, and you'll have to find a way to root it. From version 1.0.15 the system is already pre-rooted and included the SuperSU app.
HARDWARE:
-CPU: Allwinner H3. It's not the most powerful SoC available, but a very affordable option, which is why the X1 is priced so low. It works well with 720p, 1080p and 4K movies, and can also run some 3D games (the most demanding ones can experience frame dropping). It doesn't reach very high temperatures, so device operation is smooth and safe.
- RAM memory: 1 Gb. You can’t ask for more at such a low price, but another Gb would've been ideal. But, still, you get quite a powerful device for a reasonable price, which is a plus.
- Storage: 8 Gb. Enough for the apps you'll need on a media center device, but a bit low for gamers.
PERFORMANCE:
Performance wise, the Zidoo X1 works reasonably well for such a bargain product (around $60 shipping included) but you might suffer form a little frame dropping on very high resolution videos. Like with other Android devices, you can try different media center apps or video players to see if you can find better ones. Some people have reported they have been able to replace the built in Kodi with a newer and better version, but that's something meant for advanced users and you might end up having to reinstall the firmware if you break something.
APP RECOMMENDATIONS:
If you want to use the Zidoo X1 as a media player, that's what it's meant for, so the apps are already built in, such as Kodi and the Android music player.
If you wish to watch movies, you can start by installing Google Play Movies. If your country is supported, you can rent or buy movies in your local language for a few $. There are other apps to watch movies "for free", but those fall in the "piracy" category, so I will not cover them in this review. The X1 includes Aptoide (these Chinese makers never learn...) so you can download almost any app with it, paid or not (but don't expect paid apps to work, since many will try to check whether you purchased them through Google Play Store).
Don't forget that any app available on the Google Play Store is supposed to work, so if you own and external keyboard and a mouse, you could even use the X1 as a mini computer. There are already many Office suites available (WPS Office, Officesuite, etc.), as well as Internet Browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Dolphin, etc.) so you can use it as a spare PC, something your kids can enjoy an even smash on your floor without breaking it.
Gaming seems an issue, since many people have reported the X1 doesn't currently support the usage of gamepads, so only games which can be played with an external mouse and keyboard are really playable. I hope this will be fixed in the near future, with Zidoo adding the corresponding drivers.
